Coughing is a common condition experienced by both adults and children. However, it can be caused by various factors leading to different coughs. Therefore, the treatment given for each type of cough varies. To choose the right cough medicine, it is essential to understand the type and cause of the cough.

Check out the guide to select the appropriate cough medicine for your condition.

Three basic types of cough medicine

Cough medicines can be categorized into three basic types based on their functions. These include:

Expectorant

An expectorant is a type of cough medicine that helps thin mucus in the respiratory tract so that it is easier to expel through coughing. One of the active ingredients used in this type of drug is guaifenesin.

This drug works by stimulating the production of thinner mucus and loosening mucus already in the respiratory tract in the throat, bronchi and lungs. With thinner mucus, the coughing process becomes more effective in clearing mucus in the respiratory tract.

Expectorant drugs are usually recommended to treat coughs with phlegm, where mucus or phlegm must be removed from the respiratory tract. For dosage and usage rules, you need to read the instructions for use or follow the doctor's instructions.

Suppressant

Suppressants are a type of drug that helps reduce the frequency of coughing by reducing the cough reflex. The active ingredient commonly used in this type of drug is dextromethorphan.

This drug works by inhibiting the cough reflex in the throat, thereby reducing the urge to cough. This medicine is suitable for reducing the frequency of dry coughs or no phlegm.

Combination

Combination cough medicine is a type of medicine that contains more than one type of active ingredient, which is a combination of expectorant and suppressant. This product may contain other ingredients that help relieve cough-related symptoms such as nasal congestion, allergies, runny nose, or pain.

Combination cough medicine is usually recommended if you have a cough accompanied by a cold, allergies, or a blocked nose. You must follow the instructions on the packaging or your doctor's instructions.

How to use cough medicine safely?

Make sure to review the contents

As previously mentioned, cough medicine has three different types. Adjust the cough medicine product you choose to the cough you complain about. If you have a cough with phlegm, you should choose an expectorant medicine, whereas if your cough is dry, then a cough suppressant medicine will be effective in dealing with your complaint.

Combination cough medicine must be chosen if your complaint is not just a cough, but also a blocked nose, runny nose, or allergies.

Measure the dose accurately

You need to measure the correct dose and follow the recommended dosage instructions. Using higher doses is not recommended because it can cause side effects and serious health problems.

Beware of combination products

Combination cough medicines typically contain multiple active ingredients that can effectively treat all cough symptoms. However, it's important to exercise caution when taking such medications and avoid taking those that contain the same ingredients to avoid the risk of overdose or unwanted side effects.

Limiting use

Each medicine packaging usually includes a statement to limit the use of the medicine to no more than 7 days. If the symptoms do not improve, then you need to see a doctor and get a recommendation for a different and more effective medication.

Be mindful of any reactions or allergies that may occur

It's important to note that some individuals may experience an allergic reaction or unwanted side effects from the active ingredients in certain drugs. To prevent this, it's best to avoid taking drugs that contain ingredients known to trigger allergies or reactions. If you have known allergies to specific active ingredients, inform your doctor or pharmacy staff beforehand to ensure your safety and well-being.

Keep away from young children

Selecting the appropriate medication based on your child's age is important. Avoid giving cough and cold medicine to children under 4 years old. If your child is between 4 and 6 years old, it's best to consult your doctor before administering any medication. Additionally, carefully follow the dosage instructions on the label.

If you have a cough that lasts for over eight weeks, it is considered a chronic cough. Regular cough medicines available in drugstores or supermarkets may not be effective in treating this type of cough. It is important to seek medical attention, get an examination, and receive appropriate treatment if you have a chronic cough.
